I'm at well over 200 by my count of RCT studies going back to the 1920s showing masks are useless - and even harmful. Yet....here we are. The interesting part is actual experts on masks like industrial hygienists (and even physicists) do not recommend masks in community settings but non-mask experts like physicians and epidemiologists continue to peddle them. Sans preuve, Hard.

Canada - and particularly Quebec - is the embodiment of what a society looks and sounds like with sophistry as its main mode of discourse frozen in 2020.

Canada (led by Quebec which by now is a psychological and scientific study onto itself. It's the only jurisdiction not just in North American with emergency measures in place but among most Western countries. Distinct indeed) has not evolved scientifically at all; its population further adrift from other Western nations wallowing in some superstitious trance slammed with Stockholm Syndrome. A Covid outlier among nations.....

....and PROUD of it.

Here's how I view Canada and Quebec. They're so far behind the race they think they're leading not realizing they've been lapped. But they think they're winning.

By the time they get to the finish line they find the medals ceremony is completed and wonder 'Wha happened?'

Well said. Quebec (where I live) is truly a nightmare. There was a moment in December when it became clear the marketing behind the vaxxine had been based on falsehoods, and many vaxxed were getting Covid. Almost to a person the vaxxed were waking up to the idea that they had been misled into a medical intervention. Even the health minister said that vaxxines aware not effective enough. In a remarkable and insane move Legault ramped up the fear and hysteria by cancelling NYE, and images of police marching down the street blaring out of megaphones that there was a curfew in effect. Legault then blamed the vile unvaxxed. Every two days it was another irresponsible and unscientific claim against those who practiced prudence in the face of a medical intervention. And just like that…every vaxxed person I knew who was waking up went back to sleep. Most got boosted. At this point the government at the provincial and federal level have near total control of the fear centre of people’s brains. It has been nightmarish to see the manifestation of total irrationality at the social and even cultural level, with then the disturbing outcome that under these conditions rationality only means less irrational. There is no rationality grounding discourse or policy. The press conference itself is the embodiment of this new reality: politician or health official blatantly states unscientific misinformation, that then can ground an irrational policy into the reality of society, and the press and media amplify it, never questioning the assumptions. Most people watch this and are taken in by the press conference. The questions not asked are the decisive silence of the new reality. By not asking them they don’t exist, and the narrative compliance is fully manifested. It is maddening. Currently I am in Alberta. Covid is basically done here. Now and again you see a wild eyed mask person shopping or walking outside, but for the most part people are doing what people used to do. And Quebec has extended the mask mandate. It will end for the summer, only to be reintroduced in the Fall. And no one in the media will ask; how was there ever any “surge” given the mask mandate in place? It just keeps going. It is vital that we forget what life was like before Covid.

I'm in Quebec as well. It's truly Orwellian and utterly disappointing how easily it is to fool Quebecers. The pressers are showcases of the Ministry of Lies and Propaganda. They exude an atmosphere of Soviet-style propaganda. No jurisdiction in North America is holding any pressers. Everyone wants to - and HAS - moved on leaving Quebec as a dystopian outlier. Never in a million years would have I believed Quebec would be this, well, stupid. These people in charge shouldn't be controlling anything let alone managing a public health crisis. Legault has shown himself to be a shameless and cynical political opportunist with scant a stick of class. Worse for Dube. He outrageously blindsided a society prepping for celebration and still....no public anger. In fact, he'll get re-elected. One can only hope with less of a majority. Hence, I will be moving eventually from Canada within the next five years if possible. The country showed its true colours and it's not pretty.

If you look and compare Quebec to Norway, Sweden, Ontario and a couple of states, it's perfectly clear and obvious restrictions have NO impact on mortality and transmission. The restrictions should be DEAD and BURIED. Alas, this is no longer about science, logic and reason. It's all about drama and control. And boy do Canadians love to be controlled like serfs and sheep.

Spot on: courage is in such short supply.

Have you seen any discussion of whether "long covid" and "long flu" are both just specific examples of post-viral fatigue syndrome (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3063394/)?

Pursuant to this point, "Your livelihood now and in the future is MUCH less safe. The world you are entering is much less healthy," one question not enough people give proper consideration to is the precedent they're helping to set by tolerating or even supporting such oppression. What are the limits of this ascendant hyper-paternalism? What other contagious diseases will we shut down society for? What other threats to our "health and safety" warrant the destruction of our rights and way of life?

Just because someone is willing to take a jab or eleven for covid doesn't mean they'll be willing to submit to the next extraordinary demand.

We know the climate shutdowns are coming. We know digital ID and currency are only a matter of time. Programmable digital currency is the absolute form of control. The actions taken by the government against the truckers was the beta version of the new system to quash dissent. Seize their money and assets. The impact of this is dark: everyone in Canada will think twice about protesting against the government. We now will have state funded protests. All other protests have the potential of being labelled illegal. Unfortunately I am rather pessimistic when it comes to the next demand. The vast majority of people in urban and semi-urban areas will submit. They have submitted. There will be enclaves of people who will resist, and maybe even a province…but these people will be demonized. The demonization will produce an in and out group. The binary will persuade those on the fence not to be a part of the out group. Rinse and repeat. The capture of the media and the employment of nudging appear complete and total to me. And we see the capture everywhere: the IPCC report on climate change reproduces the language and ideology of the WHO pandemic response pamphlet, which reproduces the language and ideology of the UN report on Covid, a document which came out of a conference in Canada in 2020. The recommendations in that document suggested research topics. And like clock work SSHRC reproduces the research recommendations, and funds them at the university level that at its core reproduces the language and ideology permeating international organizations. I don’t see any way out.

I hope you are wrong, as I'm sure you do too.

Interesting how diversity is revered until it isn't, eh?

Philosophically I am against all mandates. Every medical procedure must require informed consent, and even if the medical procedure is entirely no risk and all reward an individual has the right of refusal. Rhetorically, however, I think it’s useful to engage with the idea of a mandate, and establish a very high bar for one. There are more than a few people in positions of authority and power who think a mandate for a Covid vaxxine is rational. How do you reach people like this or people who are accept at face value the idea of a mandate? This assumes that these people can be reached in the first place. My optimism has not wholly disintegrated yet.
